Clinaical Study on Serum Total Immunoglobulla E in Healthy Adult Korean and Diseases

Abstract
Since the study of serum immunoglobulin E(IgE) level in normal and diseases in Korea is still few, auther measured the serum total IgE levels in 145 cases, including 26 cases of healthy adults, 13 cases of extrinsic bronchial asthma, 10 cases of intrinsic bronchial asthma, 11 cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema, 7 cases of malignancy, 15 cases of renal diseases such as acute and chronic glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome, 23 cases of liver diseases such as chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis and 40 cases of non-allergic medical diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal diseases and neurological diseases. The phadebas IgE PRIST kit was used for measurement of serum total IgE. The results were as follows;
1. The serum total IgE level was average 90.8 IU/ml in normal adult, average 117.2 IU/ml in male, 71.4 IU/ml in female, (this difference was significant statistically), average 100. 0 IU/ml in 20-40 year old adult and 85.0 ILI/ml in over 40 year old adult (this difference was not significant).
2. The serum total IgE level was markedly elevated with average 779.9 IU/ml in extrinsic
j type of bronchial asthma, but in intrinsic type of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive
g pulmonary emphysema, the serum IgE level were average 346.7 IU/ml and 379.2 IU/ml respectively, which showed a moderate elevation of serum IgE and possible inclusion of mixed type of asthma into the intrinsic asthma and emphysema group of patients was inferred.
3. In malignancy cases, there were marked decrease of IgE in most cases and in cases of chronic active hepatitis and liver cirrhosis with age over 40 years, the serum IgE was ¢¥ markedly elevated with average 1183.3 IU/ml.
4. In renal diseases such as glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome with age 20-40 year old, the total serum IgE was increased with average 384.3 IU/ml and the cause and significance were not clear. There was mild increase of serum IgE in non allergic other medical diseases but it was not statistically significant,
